WHAT WAS THE LOUISIANA PURCHASE?

  • Thomas Jefferson bought the land off the French for 15 million dollars
  • The French had little purpose of the land so they were eager to sell it
  • Offer was too good to pass up
  • Even though President Jefferson thought it unconstitutional he still bought the land
  • Of course this was a good choice as helped the U.S. Expand its terriortory

LEWIS AND CLARK'S EXPEDITION

  • Meriwether Lewis was a great man who was the secretary of the president.
  • William Clark was a friend of Lewis from military service.
  • The purpose of the expedition was to explore the west and find out more about the Louisiana territory.
  • There guide sacagewea helped them through the thick pine forests of the west and helped them greatly.

THE SECOND GREAT AWAKENING

  • The Second Great Awakening was the religious revival that swept through America.
  • At gatherings preachers offered a simple message that ordinary people could grasp.
  • They stressed the idea of equality of all believers before God.
  • This awakening helped a ton. it gave people a way to better their lives and try harder as a whole.

AUTHORS AND PAINTERS

  • Washington Irving wrote a collection of short stories which he titled The Sketch Book.
  • He was most famous for his work "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow."
  • George Caleb Bingham a famous painter painted fur traders, riverboat workers, and political speakers.
  • He was a great man who followed the move of the American culture.

SONGWRITERS AND ARCHITECTS

  • One of the most successful songwriters of the time named Stephen C. Foster.
  • He managed to create interesting pieces of music that combined European and African music together.
  • American architects based their designs off of the Ancient Greek and roman styled buildings.
  • Many of the pillars and buildings and designs are similar and make up a lot of the capital buildings.

AMERICAN LIFE IN THE SOUTH

  • The South's plantation culture was incredibly based on cash crops.
  • Slave life was hard on the life of the African Americans.
  • The African Americans wouldn't be able to survive without food and shelter.
  • They grew all kinds of crops including tobacco and sugarcane for the economic needs.

AMERICAN LIFE IN THE NORTH

  • Most American life in the north relied on industry for the economic welfare.
  • The gap between the poor and the rich widened.
  • A middle class of artisans and others like shopkeepers made up the middle class.
  • Many of the wealthiest lived in the north.
