PALEO PEOPLE

  • Paleo is a greek word
  • Became extinct about 9,000 years ago
  • Trveled in tribes of 20-50 people
  • Inventing spears of stone

WOODLAND PEOPLE

  • Eastern USA and Canada
  • Created the dream catcher
  • Many Woodland peoples used spears and atlatls
  • Lived in a one bedroom home created with trees

EASTERN WOODLAND PEOPLE

  • Lived in Eastern USA and Canada
  • Tended to live near water
  • Were very skilled hunters and fishermen
  • Wigwams are houses made of saplings

ARCHAIC PEOPLE

  • Hunted mammoth and bison
  • Lived in groups of 30 or less
  • Collected shells and other materials
  • Made tools of stone

MISSISSIPPIAN PEOPLE

  • Lived along the Ohio River
  • Very skilled craftsmen
  • Houses were usually rectangular
  • Grew to be dependent on farming

CHEROKEE PEOPLE

  • Able to read and write
  • Became expert weapon makers
  • Well-known for talented artwork
  • Baskets were a Cherokee specialty

CATAWBA PEOPLE

  • Catawba means "river people"
  • Lived in barked covered houses
  • Never painted pottery or glazed
  • Were sedentary agriculturists

YAMASSEE PEOPLE

  • Known as the most fierce warriors of all the native tribes encountered
  • Yamassee means gentle
  • Huts made of logs with thatched, palmetto roofs
  • 87 warriors fought with the colonists in the Tuscarora War of 1712.
