AMERICAN INDIANS/ALASKAN NATIVES

THE DAWES ACT

  • Approved on February 8, 1887.
  • Treatment of Indians as individuals rather than members of tribes.
  • The law allowed breaking up reservations into small allotments.
  • The purpose of the Dawes Act is to protect Indian property rights.

CITIZENSHIP ACT

  • Approved June 2, 1924.
  • Granted citizenships to all Indians born in the US.
  • After the Citizenship Act some Native Americans werent allowed to vote.

WORLD WAR II

  • For the first time Amercan Indians registered for the draft.
  • 44,000 natives served in the war.
  • Native Americans changed the war.
  • Was a contribution of it's very own "first citizens."

INDIAN REORGANIZATION ACT (IRA)

  • Started June 28, 1934
  • Encouraged a renewed respect for native american culture.
  • Conserved Indian land and resources.
  • Have they right to form business and organizations.

AMERICAN INDIAN MOVEMENT (AIM)

  • Began in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1968.
  • Indians protested and gained media attention.
  • An organization to encourage self-determination.
  • Its main purpose was to help the Indians that lived in reservations.

WOUNDED KNEE INCIDENT

  • February 27, 1973
  • About 200 Oglala Lokota settled in the town of Wounded Knee.
  • When the AIM got violent the wounded knee incident occured
  • Indians Vs. Government
  • 2 were killed and 13 were wounded.

  • 1924 indian citizenship act
  • 1934 indian reorganization act
  • 1975 indian education system act
  • 1980 autonomy act

FACTS & STATISTICS

  • Native American have the highest proverty rate which is 25%.
  • Unemployment rate is 69% on the Blackfoot Reservation.
  • Median income on household is $33,627
  • 39% graduate compared to 60% of white students.
  • Natives were called redskins

CONNECTION TO NEBRASKA COMMUNITIES

  • Laws are similar such as family laws.
  • Universities are dedicated to teaching about the Natives.
  • 8 tribes in NE

CONNECTION

  • In the book To Kill a Mockingbird it talks about
  • his background and Jem mentions then "Creek war"
  • which is where General Jackson drove the Indians up the creek
  • and Simon Finch wouldnt have paddled up the river to Alabama.

MOVEMENT

  • We believe Native Americans have made growth since the
  • civil rights movement because their are nearly half a million
  • Indians in the United States. They're now laws to protect them
  • and they have rights.
