BACKGROUND

  • Seven years' war (1756 -1763)
  • It divided European powers into two coalitions
  • Kingdom of Great Britain (Prussia, Portugal,Hanover)
  • Kingdom of France (Spain, Austria, Russia, Sweden)
  • France loses Ontario and Louisiana. Spain loses Florida

EARLY SEEDS

  • King Philip's war (1675)
  • Taxes: currency act, sugar act, stamp act.
  • No taxation without representation
  • Sons of Liberty in Boston
  • Boston Massacre
  • Tea party

MILITARY HOSTILITIES BEGIN

  • Massachusetts declared in state of rebellion 1775
  • George Washington, as the commander of the new army, expelled British from Boston
  • Loyalists were left with no support from UK

INDEPENDENCE

  • Colonies issued new constitution and started calling themselves "states"
  • Declaration of independence by Thomas Jefferson

REVOLUTIONARY WAR

  • UK had three big advantages: a trained army, the biggest navy fleet and a strong economy
  • Battle of Brooklyn 1776
  • Battle of Saratoga 1777
  • France and Spain support the US from 1778
  • Cornwallis surrenders in Yorktown after a siege led by Washington and the French Navy
  • Treaty of Paris 1783
