WHY DID THE AMERICANS WIN THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION

LOYALISTS

  • Britain promised liberation for slaves who fought for the British
  • Approximately 50,000 slaves were loyalists
  • About 20 percent of the colonists were loyalists
  • Loyalists often joine the British army
  • About 80,000 loyalists left after the patriot won

GREAT BRITAIN'S MILITARY

  • The British had around 30,000 soilders
  • The British fought in a napoleonic style
  • The British navy had 37 ships
  • They were defeated because they were so far from home

AMERICAS MILITARY AND POLITICAL LEADERSHIP

  • George Washington was in charge of America's army
  • They fought gorilla style catching the British off guard
  • They were not as trained as the British were army
  • They had around 20,000 soldiers

IDEOLOGY OF THE AMERICANS

  • They thought the British gov. was unfair
  • Tried to peacefully resloove the issues
  • Belived they could defeat Britain

  • First battles

  • British won at Lexington
  • Patriots won at Concord

BATTLE OF BUNKER HILL

  • June 17, 1775
  • British won
  • Britain suffered heavy losses
  • Britain had to charge the hill 3 times before they defeated the patriots
  • Bunker Hill was a key location because u could see sourrounding land

BATTLE OF FORT WASHINGTON

  • November 16, 1776
  • British victory
  • Hightest point on manhattan island
  • Britaain sent patriots into a defensive line at the start of the battle
