WHY ARE WE UPSET WITH BRITAIN?

  • Britain is taking advantage of us!
  • Passing many Acts to take our money
  • Forcing us to pay more for common necessities
  • Doing these things, and giving us no say in Parliament
  • The Boston Massacre

TAXATION W/O REPRESENTATION

  • Britain passes acts for the common good, right? WRONG!
  • We have no say in our own taxation. Who represents us in Parliament?
  • NO ONE. We abide by rules across a sea!
  • They cannot tax us without our permission! Or popular consent!
  • NO TAXATION WITHOUT REPRESENTATION!!

ACTS

  • Stamp Act of 1765
  • Townshend Acts of '67
  • Tea Act of '73
  • Coercive Acts of '74
  • Quartering Act
Background foreshadowing!

Stamp Act of 1765

  • An official stamp must be purchased along with any paper product.
  • The first direct tax to the people instead of imports and exports
  • Playing cards, legal papers, and more all are taxed now!
  • Refusal to comply: fines and even time in prison!
  • Repealed by Parliament after we declared it a violation of rights ('66)

TOWNSHEND ACTS

  • Glass, lead, paints, and tea, taxed. Surprise!
  • Paper tax is back! Honest captains shamed when:
  • Their ships are searched for contraband.
  • They sent British soldiers here to threaten us!
  • We hate these acts! They take power from our governments!

TEA ACT OF '73

  • Merchants smuggled in tea w/o the duty paid
  • British East India Company given permission to sell directly to us
  • Cheap tea- less smuggling, happy faced colonists? Good idea, Tea Act.
  • Ships arrived, were told to leave and to stay. They waited in the harbor.
  • The Sons of Liberty needed no more encouragement:
Please disregard the modern elements in the background of the background picture. Focus on the foreground!

BOSTON MASSACRE

  • High tensions between Bostonians and soldiers exploded
  • On 3/5/1770, one soldier argued with a colonist and hit him.
  • A crowd gathered, throwing snowballs and insults. Backup came.
  • Crowd became angrier, goading the "rascals" to "fire if they dared".
  • Three did, killing three men, including Crispus Attucks, sailor.

COERCIVE (INTOLERABLE) ACTS

  • 💥These may spark a revolution!💥
  • Boston Harbor has been closed until we pay for the tea. (Mentioned later)
  • Massachusetts' charter has been cancelled!
  • Accused royal officials are sent to Britain for trial, which is rubbish!
  • A large chunk of land has been given to Quebec, and a general is Governor of MA!

QUARTERING ACT

  • Passed under the Coercive Acts
  • Colonists are required to house soldiers!
  • Additions to the household are expensive and rude!
  • These "guests" are a violation of our rights!

FIGHTING BACK

Forms of Colonial Protest

COMMITTEES OF CORRESPONDENCE

  • Founded by Samuel Adams and others
  • Committees contacted other towns and colonies.
  • Members share ideas/info on new laws and ways to change them
  • Effects of this expression of protest: Organized the people into
  • a group that was beginning to think rebelliously.

BOYCOTTING

  • Boycotting British goods is common practice.
  • Some stores openly boycotted the Stamp Act
  • The first boycott began in New York in 1765.
  • We boycott to hurt the British economy
  • Things we've boycotted: stamps, glass, lead, paper, tea

EFFECTS OF BOYCOTTS

  • Sons of Liberty formed
  • Courts shut down, legal papers needed Stamps
  • Declaratory Act passed, Parliament makes laws for colonies
  • Boston Tea Party (continued tea boycott), passage of Tea Act
  • Effect of Boston Tea Party: Coercive Acts

SONS OF LIBERTY

  • Secret society dating back to 1765.
  • Committed Boston Tea Party
  • Spread propoganda, exaggerated one-sided stories.
  • Founded by Samuel Adams
  • Use violence to frighten tax collectors

EFFECTS OF S.o.L

  • "Intolerable" Acts
  • Frightened tax collectors
  • Daughters of Liberty form
  • British troops arrive in Boston in 1768
  • Boston Tea Party

BOSTON TEA PARTY

  • December 16, 1773
  • Colonists disguised as Indians sneaked onto ships
  • They dumped a whopping 340+ chests of tea overboard!
  • The streets rang with cries of "Boston Harbour is a teapot tonight!"
  • This infuriated the new Prime Minister of Britain. The colonies were punished.
In colonial times, everyone was made of Legos, kids!
Sarcasm time!

EFFECTS OF THE TEA PARTY

  • Coercive Acts, to punish us
  • British troops are living among us!
  • The harbor is closed!
  • They have infiltrated our government!
  • They gave our land to Quebec!
