13 COLONIES

•Mid 1700’s- 13 colonies are thriving
•Most were British
•Common language
•Political background

•Each colony had representative assembly
•Used to governing themselves*****

NAVIGATION ACTS

•Relationship is good to start...

•Navigation acts
•Ship goods only to GB or other colonies
•All goods going to colonies had to pass through GB and pay a duty

•Not as bad as it sounds…
•Colonies were able to develop strong shipping industry
•No foreign competition.

COLONIAL POLITICS

•Each had a governor appointed by King
•Gov. appointed judges and other officials.
•Each had elected assembly
•There were struggles…
•Assembly could do things...
•Governor could be bribed by the assembly if he did not do what the colonist desired.

THE GREEDY AND NEEDY

•GB’s problems caused need to depend more on growing colonies.
•To get out of debt.
•Help relieve economic stress at home.

FIRST CONTINENTAL CONGRESS

•September 5, 1774- Philly
•First Continental Congress
•First time this happened
•First sign of an “American”

•Realized they needed to get away from GB
•Agreed to not import and export goods to GB
•minutemen.

WAR BREAKS OUT

LEXINGTON CONCORD
•War broke out in 1775
•Lexington and Concord
•Second Continental Congress a month later
•Name Military Commander
•Many didn’t want to fight.
•Olive Branch Petition to King
•Refused it
•No other choice but to fight

•“Time to Part.”
•Promoted independence for economic, social, and moral reasons.

•Congress put 5 guys in charge of writing a letter…

THE DECLARATION OF INDEPENDENCE

•Thomas Jefferson -main writer
•Relied heavily on John Locke’s writings

•Governments are created by agreements, and when the agreement is not met, the governed have the right to change who governs them.

•July 4, 1776, congress adopted the letter.

•Enlightenment values in American republic
•Ideas of thinkers helped shape US

•Constitution and Declaration of Independence inspired others to do the same…
