REASON FOR THE SOUTHERN CAMPAIGN

  • The southern campaign started because the British needed more people on their side to win the war, reason for that is because of little progress in the north. So in the early 1778 British turned their attention to the south. The reason why the British turn their attention is because they believed that gaining control of the southern colonies would increase their chances in winning the war. The southern colonies produced profitable items that the British believe would help their economy and army.

REASONS FOR THE SOUTHERN CAMPAIGN CONTINUE

  • Also another reason is the British knew that there is a lot of loyalist in the south that they know will help them.

BATTLE OF CHARLESTON AND CAMDEN

  • The siege of Charleston or battle of Charleston was on April 2, 1780 where the British sieged meaning a military enemy like Britain surrounds the town and cuts off supplies and continuously attacks and Britain did this for 6 weeks.
  • Andrew Pickens was captured during the battle of Charleston.
  • Battle of Camden
  • The battle took place on August 16, 1780 where the British generals Horatio gates and lord Cornwallis fought American forces and defeated them.

  • Another famous person involved in the siege of Charleston and battle of Camden was banastre tarletson

GUERRILLA WARFARE

  • Guerrilla warfare is a military tactic of ambushing, sabotaging, and hit and run tactics.
  • Guerrilla warfare is used by small groups, made up of partisan soldiers and armed civilians
  • People who used guerrilla warfare was partisan leaders and Francis Marion also known as the swamp fox

GUERRILLA WARFARE CONTINUE

  • British army got frustrated at this type of warfare because partisan leaders would surprise attack the British and run and hide never to be seen

BATTLE OF KINGS MOUNTAIN

  • The importance of the Battle of Kings Mountain is that it showed that the American colonists in the south did or would not help the British
  • Patrick Ferguson fought in the battle of Kings Mountain and died.
  • BATTLE OF COWPENS
  • The two forces in this battle were American and British, the American led by Gen. Daniel Morgan and British led by Banastre Tarletson.

BATTLE OF COWPENS CONTINUE

  • The number of men killed in the battle on the American side is 25 and British is 110 and the Battle of Cowpens ended in a victory for America.
  • BATTLE OF YORKTOWN
  • At the battle of Yorktown Gen. Cornwallis formally surrender 8000 British soldiers to a French and American force led by George Washington.
