THE HINDENBURG

HISTORY

  • The first airliner to provide regularly
  • scheduled service between
  • Europe and North America.

HISTORY

  • It was the fastest and most comfortable
  • way to cross the Atlantic in its day.

WHERE DID IT HAPPEN?

  • Lakehurst Naval Air Station in New Jersey

WHEN? HOW MANY DIED?

  • May 6, 1937
  • 13 passengers and 22 aircrewmen died
  • Also, one ground crewman died.

WHAT HAPPENED?

  • It caught fire and was destroyed
  • during its attempt to dock.
  • This shattered the publics confidence in
  • passenger-carrying airships.

THE COLUMBIA

HISTORY

  • Construction on a prototype started on June 4th 1981.
  • Construction on Columbia began on March 27, 1975.

WHEN DID IT HAPPEN?

  • February 1, 2003

WHAT HAPPENED?

  • On re-entry to earth, the Columbia caught on fire
  • and soon exploded 16 minutes from the time it was
  • supposed to land.

HOW MANY DIED?

  • Seven people died during this tragedy.

WHAT CAUSED IT?

  • A piece of foam insulation broke off from the
  • Columbia's external tank and struck the left wing.
  • When the Shuttle reentered the atmosphere, the damage
  • allowed hot gases to penetrate and destroy the internal
  • wing, which caused it to become unstable and slowly break apart.

WHERE DID IT HAPPEN?

  • Somewhere above Texas and Louisiana, on its way
  • to land at Kennedy Space Center in Florida.

THE CHALLENGER

HISTORY

  • After its first flight in April 1983, Challenger quickly
  • became the workhorse of NASA's Space Shuttle fleet,
  • flying far more missions per year than Columbia. In
  • 1983 and 1984, Challenger flew on 85%
  • of all Space Shuttle missions.

WHEN?

  • January 28, 1986

WHAT HAPPENED?

  • It disintegrated 73 seconds into its flight.
  • Disintegration of the began after an O-ring seal
  • in its right solid rocket booster failed at liftoff.

HOW MANY DIED? SURVIVED?

  • The seven crew members all died.

WHERE DID IT HAPPEN?

  • over the Atlantic Ocean, off the coast of Florida
