THE "SECOND GREAT AWAKENING"

  • Outdoor revivals brought back strong religious feelings
  • Protestant Evangelicals preached about individuals ability to reach salvation
  • Evangelicals used mass political tactics- mass meetings, pamphlets
  • Abolitionist we're greatly encouraged by the Protestant Evangelicals

PRISON REFORM

  • Dangerous criminals were locked up with drunks and debtors
  • Prisons were often dirty and unhealthy
  • Some prisons had inmates keep strict silence
  • Guards beat prisoners
  • Food was of poor quality

REFORMS FOR THE MENTALLY ILL

  • Often the mentally ill we're locked up with criminals
  • Often beaten, chained to wall or chair for days
  • Men,women,and children locked away in cold dark cells unclothed

REFORMS FOR PRISONS AND MENTAL HOSPITALS

  • Dorothea Dix will visit many prisons and hospitals
  • She will have cruel punishments banned
  • Mentally I'll now treated as patients not criminals
  • Eliza Farnham a warden for women's prison was able to get reforms
  • She allowed prisoners to speak freely, put in a library, and a prison school

TEMPERANCE MOVEMENT

  • Americans feared consumption of alcohol promoted "ungodly" behavior
  • Many believed alcohol ruined people's health, disrupted family life, and led to unemployment
  • In 1826 the American Temperance Society was formed
  • The main objective is to abstain from drinking altogether to better society
