AMERIGO VESPUCCI

BORN ON MARCH 9, 1454 IN FLORENCE ITALY

VOYAGE 1

  • According to a letter Vespucci might or might not have written
  • On May 10, 1497 departing with a fleet of spanish ships
  • Sailed to the West Indies and made their way to the mainland
  • Of Central American within 5 weeks
  • If true he discovered Venezuela before Christopher Columbus

VOYAGE 2

  • May 1499 sailing for Spain
  • He was a navigator under Alonzo de ojeda
  • Crossed the equator, traveled to the coast of Guyana he is believed
  • to leave ojeda and went to explore Brazil on that journey he is said
  • to have discovered the amazon river and Cape st. Augustine

VOYAGE 3

  • May 14, 1501 he departed on his trans Atlantic journey
  • He set sail for Cape Verde, for King Manuel 1 of Portugal
  • His 3rd voyage was his most successful
  • He didn't start out as commander, then Portuguese officers
  • Asked him to take over and he agreed

VOYAGE 3 CONTINUED

  • They sailed along the coast of South America from
  • Cape Sao roque to Patagonia, they discovered Rio de Janeiro
  • And Rio de la Plata, June 10, 1503 he sailed under Portuguese flag
  • Accompanied by Gonzalo Coelho headed back to Brazil didn't find anything new
  • So the fleet disbanded, the commander was nowhere to be found

AMERIGO VESPUCCI

  • America was named after Amerigo Vespucci
  • A florentine navigator and explorer who played a
  • prominent role in exploring the new world
  • His nickname was the Pickle Dealer
