• Former Catholic priest Menno Simons led his anabaptist followers to Switzerland
• There the Mennonite community was established
• 17th century, Jakob Amman split the community started his own group
• Named it after himself; Amish

EDUCATION

• Average schoolhouse size - 30 students
• Teachers are single amish women
• After graduating in 8th grade, they learn their parents job

LANGUAGE

• Mainly Pennsylvanian German (Dutch)
• Speak English to English people
• Taught German in schools
