luke has never had a friend because he is a third child. third children are not legal.that means that if he is caught they will kill him.he has to stay in his room that is a attic before they started to build new houses he was able to go out side for a little bit at a time when his parents were out side.

then he meats another 3rd child that moved in the new house that they just built. her name was jen. Jen.Jen was tired of hiding so she and other 3rd children went to the capital and protested but luke stayed behind later on in the story he discovered that they were all killed when he met her dad. he made luke a fake id so he could move away and go to school not able to his family again.
