THE MILD WEST

VIOLENCE IN OLD WEST
- contrary to the idea of the west being filled with outlaws, thugs and murder (there was still these) but, it was very peaceful
- the west in movies and literature:
~ the west was filled with a lot more quaint and beautiful side that movies and literature do not tell.

THE US MARSHAL
- US Marshals are the oldest law enforcement agency
- 1789
~ September 24 George Washington appointed the first thirteen US Marshals
*from 1789 on the US Marshals mainly conducted death sentences
- 1850
~ fugitive slave law is enforced by US Marshals and Marshals are responsible to take back run away slaves to owner
-1861
~ during civil war US Marshals confiscated property used to support the Confederacy

-1865-1900
~ US Marshals were important peace keepers during the old west.

-present day
~ US Marshals service can do almost any thing. They take care of witness security, prisoner transportation, and fugitive apprehension.
