CHILDHOOD

  • Born Amy Marcy Cheney
  • Born in Henniker, New Hampshire
  • Only child
  • Father was Charles Abbot Cheney
  • Mother was Clara Imogene Cheney
  • Showed evidence of being a prodigy right away

CHILDHOOD CON’T

  • Memorized and sang 40 songs by age 1
  • Improvised counter melody at age 2
  • Taught herself to read at age 3
  • Composed three waltzes for piano at age 4….with no piano!
  • Could play songs by ear and her family struggles to keep up with her musical talents and demands

MUSICAL EDUCATION

  • Began piano lessons at age 6
  • Played public recitals
  • One recital reviewed by The Folio
  • Multiple agents proposed a tour but her parents declined
  • They moved to Boston we’re she received formoal training for one year

EARLY CAREER

  • She made debut brought age 16
  • Put the following two years included performances in chickering hall and starred in the final performance of the bossen symphony’s 1884-85 season

MARGIE

  • Married in 1885 to dr. Herry Harris Aubrey beach
  • Husbend was a surgeon and 24 years older then her
  • Was forced to live according to his status and limited performances two pucic performances per year
  • Herry died in 1910

RISE TO FAME

  • Major success when the Handel and Haydn society orchestra land her pice making it the first pice composed by a woman
  • Gaelic symphony was they first symphony composed and polished by in American woman
  • Became part of the bossen six

YEARS IN EUROPE

  • Took some time off after her husband and mother died in 1910
  • Resumed giveing concerts in 1912

  • She died from a heart aliment in New York
