  • Her parents were Charles Abbott Cheney and Clara Imogene Mary Cheney
  • She was an only child
  • Born in Henniker, New Hampshire U.S.
  • Taught herself to read at age 3

CHILDHOOD CONTINUED

  • Capable of improvising counter-melody by age 2
  • Memorized 40 songs by age 1 and could sing them all accurately
  • At age 4 composed 3 waltzes

MUSIC EDUCATION

  • Composed simple waltzes at age 4
  • Played works by Handel, Beethoven and Chopin by 7
  • Could compose music in her head
