To begin with the painting was interpreted as a political allegory , reflecting the dilemma of Alfonso I d’Este, the duke of Ferrara, who, alike other Italian princes, had to decide whether to support the Emperor Charles V or Pope Julius II.
It was also thought to represent the three ages of men, which was also thought to be symbolised by the animals below. The wolf being elderly, the lion being middle aged and the dog being youthful.
Prudence and time, financial planning, sin and penitence and the practice of art, are also ideas for what the painting was intended to be representing
