An immigrant's life is very difficult. Not only was the journey difficult and fearful, but the process of getting into America was full of challenges. The trip wasn't all bad though, there was also lots of hope, excitement, and pride.

Passage:
The immigrants had a long, tough, and painful journey over oceans on congested ships that were designed for cattle or cargo. There was little room, clean air, and lots of bad weather that they had to endure on their trip to America.

"Day after day the weather was bad and the sea stormy. The hatch was tightly closed and there was no circulation of air, so we were all tortured by the bad odor."
-Japanese immigrant describes the voyage

Arrival:
Once the immigrants arrived, the European immigrants entered in Ellis Island, NY and Asian immigrants entered through Angel Island just outside of San Francisco.

As soon as they got off the ship, immigrant officials put a tag on the immigrants and pointed the way for them to go.

Ethnic Neighborhoods:
All immigrants were crammed into ethnic neighborhoods. Each immigrant kept their traditional ways while adjusting to the new culture. It took time, but many immigrants could speak English and learned American traditions.

Citizenship:
Becoming a citizen took a lot of hard work, but it was many immigrant's proudest life moment.

"I am the youngest of America's children, and into my hands is given all her priceless heritage...Mine is the whole majestic past, and mine is the shining future."
-Russian immigrant expresses pride in becoming U.S. citizen
