who is Herb (maury's father)?

  • bought drumsticks from a door-to-door salesman 60 years ago
  • played drums in a jazz band and loved the Japanese sticks
  • wrote letters to the Japanese gov't to find out who made them
  • heard from Tat Kosaka from Japan and became best friends
  • started Promark, a drumstick business with Tat, on a handshake

who is herb (maury's father)?

  • owned a music retail store in Houston, Texas
  • had to sell 1,200 drumsticks which was a big risk for a small shop
  • people loved the Japanese oak and the drumsticks became a big hit
  • after importing them for many years he started a factory in Houston
  • taught Maury the Promark business immediately after graduating from UT

who is maury?

  • worked in all areas of Promark before becoming the president
  • grew Promark to the largest drumstick company in the world
  • sold Promark to D'Addario, the largest guitar string company, in 2011
  • currently serves as a consultant to the company

music in maury's life

  • played drums starting at four years old
  • performed in his middle and high school band and at events
  • doesn't play drums anymore but loves going to live concerts
  • favorite concerts include The Who, Rush, Dave Matthews, Phil Collins
  • misses working with musicians like drummer Evelyn Glenny

herb's and tat's best advice

  • never rob anyone of their dignity
  • speak to everyone in a kind way
  • you will learn so much from people if you listen more and talk less
  • "God gave us two ears and one mouth" for a reason
