Analysis Phase

Canadian Forces Individual Training & Education System
This presentation will provide an introduction to the Analysis Phase of the Canadian Forces Individual Training & Education System (we call it CFITES in the military, pronounced like Sea Fights).

After a Needs Assessment or some other process makes it known there is a requirement for training, we then move to the Analysis Phase.

processes

  • Review Needs Assessment and other documentation
  • Analyze Tasks
  • Specify Performance Objectives
The Analysis Phase is usually handled by the Training Authority, not the Training Establishment. There are three main processes involved in this phase, which often happen as part of a Qualification Standard Writing Board or QSWB. The board is comprised of a number of different people, such as the Board Chairperson, the Training Development Officer, Training Authority and Establishment reps, and subject matter experts.

Once the board comes together, they will complete the following processes:

Review Needs Assessment and other documentation - The needs assessment or some other documentation (specifications, etc.) that indicates training is required.

Analyze Tasks - the exact tasks that must be performed as part of the qualification will be analyzed by subject matter experts

Specify Performance Objectives - In order to train the students to perform the tasks for this qualification.

Outputs

  • Training Task list
  • No-Train Task List
  • Rationale for selection/rejection
  • Proposed Instructional Strategies
  • Qualification Standard
Once the QSWB is complete, there are a number of outputs they are responsible for:

Training Task List - Of all the tasks they analyzed, they must also determine which tasks are required to be trained during this qualification.

No-Train Task List - Some tasks may have already been covered in previous training. Although the tasks are part of the qualification, they may not need to be covered during this particular course. This list outlines those tasks.

Proposed Instructional Strategies - The board can advise the Training Establishment of instructional strategies to use during the course. As our training is performance oriented, trying to make it as realistic as possible for the work conditions the students can expect post course is important!

Qualification Standard - this is the document that created by the QSWB in the end. It has all the Performance Objectives and everything else in this list. This is the document that the Training Plan Writing Board will use in the Design Phase, when the course itself is being created in order to train students to complete the tasks as per the Qualification Standard.
