PRESENTATION OUTLINE

THE NERVOUS SYSTEM

NEURONS AND NEUROGLIA

Zack Seid
Module #7
The Nervous System: Neurons & Neuroglia

The central nervous system (CNS). Composed of the brain and spinal cord.

A NEURON

THREE BASIC NEURON TYPES

  • Unipolar neurons
  • Bipolar neurons
  • Multipolar neurons

Different types of Neuroglia (neural glue).

FIVE TYPES OF NEUROGLIA

  • Oligodendrocyte
  • Schwann Cell
  • Microglia
  • Astrocytes
  • Ependymal Cells

DIFFERENT PARTS OF THE NERVE STRUCTURE

  • Epineurium and endoeurium
  • Blood vessels
  • Fascicle
  • Fat and axon
  • Perineurium

CLASSIFICATION OF NERVES

  • Sensory
  • Motor
  • Mixed

Potential difference. Depolarization, resting potential, repolarization, threshold, and resting potential.

RESTING POTENTIAL

SODIUM AND POTASSIUM GATES ARE CLOSED.

Depolarization. Sodium gates open. Sodium ions now rush into the cell according to the dictates of diffusion.

Repolarization. Sodium gates close and potassium gates open.

Resting Potential Re-Established. Sodium and potassium gates are closed.

Unmyelinated Axon. Two Schwann cells encompass several axons.

Convergent Neurons. Many inputs that lead to one limited output.

Divergent Neurons. One message gets spread to different parts of the body.

Oscillating neurons. The message that revives and regenerates on it's own.
