PRESENTATION OUTLINE

Neuromuscular Re-education

BY ZACHARY SCHAUSTER

Untitled Slide

  • This technique is used by therapist to restore movement in nerves and muscles (restore normal movement)
  • Nerves send signals between your muscles and brain so they know when, where, and how fast to move.
  • The reason why you are able to do this is because we have nerve tracts that reinforce muscle movement which is stored in your memory
  • Nerves and muscles can lose their pattern because of a certain injury that has been put upon them

TREATMENT

  • Your doctor refers you to physical therapist or occupational therapist
  • The patient will be asked about any medical history and or your symptoms and will be checked on posture, balance, and joint movement
  • neuromuscular re-education treatment plan will be designed based on your initial functioning
  • During this process of the treatment you will go through repetitive motions, posturing, and stimulation that are designed to reinforce the nerve signals for functional movements; when this is done nerve signals are retained and it then becomes automatic to the body again
  • This is first done in the hospital to have surgery which is done by the surgeon

OCCUPATIONAL THERAPY

  • Occupational therapy neuromuscular rehabilitation involves a therapeutic program that is designed to improve the function and to reduce the limitations for individuals who have experienced disease, trauma, and or disorders of the brain and spinal cord
  • The goal of this is to help the patient return to the highest level of function/movement and to also have the ability to do things on their own in daily activities.
  • The activities are to increase mobility, coordination, balance, and cognitive function.
  • Exercises and splinting to manage plasticity and pain may also be included

PHYSICAL THERAPY

  • Neuromuscular re-education consists of manual techniques activities for balance and core control
  • neuromuscular re-education activities in the out-patient orthopaedic setting is the same as it is in any other setting
  • to re-train a body part to perform some task that the body part was previously able to do.

PERSONAL ACCOUNTS

  • I would advise this procedure because this will help out with this person's personal well being and personal life
  • For these individuals it is less of building strength as it is reteaching the muscles how to fire and react to different postural changes.
  • Pain, inflammation and swelling due to surgery or traumas like rotator cuff injuries can lead to loss of neural muscular control and abnormal movement.
  • Many of our patients have general tenderness, hypo-mobility and decreased motion of a joint(s). It is necessary for a joint(s) to have full motion to be fully functional.
