ANCIENT ATHENS OLYMPICS

The only people that competed in the ancient Athens Olympics were the men of Greece.

The Olympics were a very big deal for the people in Athens. But only the men were aloud to run and watch the ancient Olympic.

One of the event was called pankration wrestling, in this event the men wrestled kind of as we do now. Once there was a man who lost because one of the rules is you can't kill your opponient and he killed him by ripping out his guts with his long nails.
So the man who was laying dead was the winner.

Another event was the sprints. They ran the sprints naked. The sprint were short distance runs.

Another event was an armor run. The men ran a long distance in full armor to show of their strength.

They also had discuss and javelin. Discuss is where you throw almost a weighted frisbee as far as you can. Javelin is were you take a spear and throw it as far as you can also.

All of these event and the whole Olympics was dedicated to the god Zeus. They sacrificed many animal durning the Olympics to Zeus.

The winner was awarded an olive wreath from a olive tree in Zeus's temple.
