MAGNETIC COMPASS

  • Invented in 250 BCE

  • The invention came about because the Chinese noted that a magnetic rock, called a lodestone, always pointed the same way (north–south) when suspended or floated. Fine metal pointers, when rubbed on the stone, were found to have the same magnetic property. These were used as the first compass needles.
