HISTORY OF CHINESE JEWELRY

  • Started being produced around 5,000 years ago
  • During the rising of Yang-Shao, a developing culture
  • Was called a Neolithic Culture
  • It had existed by the Yellow River, in China
  • The dates Jewelry was first produced was 2200 through 300 BC

JADE

  • Jade is believed to protect the person wearing it
  • Its symbol indicates grace and dignity to the owner
  • Was highly viewed and concidered more precious than even gold
  • Became a sophisticated art during the Shang dynasty
  • Chinese Jade came from theWestern point of China in Xinjiang(Khotan, Yarkand)

FAMOUS JEWELRY ACCESSORIES

  • Most famous:amulets, pins, headdresses, headbands,
  • rings and earrings
  • Are worn on both males and females

SILVER

  • Chinese jewelry favors Silver, and consider it over gold
  • They also favor Jade over any other gemstone
  • Silver is favored more because it is cheaper than gold

DESIGN TYPES

  • Different designs include: Scrolls, flowers, turtles, winged birds, dragons and also phoenix
  • Many known as religious
  • Contained various Buddhists symbols, especially the scrolls and the dragons
  • Those specific ones symobolize intelligence and good will
