CHICHEN ITZA TEMPLE

  • Built buy the post-classic Mayan People
  • Located in the Yucatan region of Mexico
  • They built these temples for worship and they also bulit other structures as just a way to build up the city, they would use them for worship.
  • The Mayans were fascinated with astronomy, they put many carvings in the stones about the celestial cycles and bodies.

STONEHENGE

  • No one knows for sure when or who built this structure
  • It is located in Wiltshire, England
  • Many people believe stonehenge may have been a burial ground
  • At a certain time in the year the sun aligns perfectly in between 2 stones, so obviously the people who built it had something to do with astronomy.

ANGKOR WAT

  • Built by King Suryavarman II
  • It is located in Cambodia
  • Originally a Hindu temple, but then turned Buddhist. People went there to worship
  • Lunar and solar calendrical cycles are revealed, also there are several lunar and solar alignments between western points.

  • Native Americans built this
  • Located in the Bighorn National Forest
  • They were built for religious, ritual, healing, and teaching purposes
  • Certain spokes on the wheel pointed to stars, and the sunrise and sunsets

  • Worshiped Venus and helped them plan attacks
  • Built temple to help them see equinoxes and the summer solstice, aligned with motions of Venus

  • Aligned with the sun's rays on the first morning in June

  • Used as a burial place for their leaders
  • Aligned pyramids with the constelations

TEOTIHUACAN PYRAMID OF THE SUN

  • The Aztecs built it
  • Located in central Mexico
  • Likely used for different rituals
  • Oriented slightly northwest of where the sun sets exactly 2 times a year
