VOCABULARY

  • City state- political units made up of a city and all the surrounding lands.
  • Golden age- a period in a society's history marked by great acheivements.
  • Athens- leading city in Ancient Greece
  • Sparta- athens rival city state
  • Hellenistic- something that is greek like

Athenians
Athenians believed that people should be free as long as they acted within the laws of Greece. Military service was optional, and they believed in democracy.

Spartans
Spartan men were groomed as professional soldiers that went through a rigorous state-sponsored education,military, and socialization program. They made all important decisions and they believed that slaves should do all the labor.

Daily life
Men had better life in Ancient Greece than women because only men could be full citizens. Men made all important decisions. Slavery was a central feature of life in Greece. They wore loose clothing because it was warm most of the time. Agriculture was a part of their daily lives.

GOVERNMENT

  • There was no central government in ancient Greece.
  • People lived in city-states.
  • Some city-states were ruled by a king.
  • One city-state, Athens, experimented with democracy, or rule by many.
  • Some city-states were ruled by a small group of people.

Alexander the Great
Alexander the Great was the king of Macedonia from 336 to 323 B.C. He United the Corinthian league and conquered Persia and Egypt to expand his kingdom. Alexander is regarded as one of history's brilliant and most powerful rulers.

Parthenon
The Parthenon is located on the Athenian Acropolis and is a temple dedicated to the goddess Athena. Who the people of Athens consider their patron. The Acropolis was a state sanctuary of the ancient city of Athens.

Ancient Greece social structure

Greek Society was mainly broken up between Free people and slaves. Spartan boys at the age of 7 entered a rigorous state-sponsored education, military and socializing program. Men made all the rules and went to work while women mostly stayed home.

Zeus
Zeus must have been a good looking man to have had almost 70 wives and he was proud of his muscles. He was the go of the sky and the heavens who controlled the storms.

Ares
Ares is the God of war, he is a bearded warrior who always wore battle arms. He is one of the tens of sons of Zeus
