PRESENTATION OUTLINE
Ancient Greece was located on the continent of Europe and was close to the Mediterranean Sea. Since Ancient Greece was by the Mediterranean Sea, it had very rich fertile soil.
City-State
A city-state is a city with surrounding territories that forms and independent state.
Golden Age
The golden age was a time in Ancient Greece when there was peace, prosperity, and happiness.
Athens
Athens was the most known city-state during the Ancient Greece time. It is also the capital of Greece.
Sparta
Sparta was a city-state in Ancient Greece. In the time period of Ancient Greece, Sparta and Athens were enemy city-states.
Hellenistic
A time period in Ancient Greece when Alexander the Great died to the defeat of Cleopatra and Mark Antony by Octavian in 31 B.C.
Similar:
They are both very well know popular city-states. They both had alliances.
Different:
The Athens did not give their woman any say in government, while Spartans did.
The Spartans culture was very laid back, while Athens was always looking forward.
The men in Ancient Greece would get to go watch plays and entertainment if they were not discussing politics, or training for the military. Women had to stay in the house and take care of duties there.
Athens was the first ever city-state to have a government called a democracy. This meant that any citizen had the right and say in law.
Alexander the Great was the king of an Ancient Greek kingdom. Alexander the Great was so important because he conquered lots of land for his kingdom of Macedonia.
The Parthenon is a formal temple on the Athenian Acropolis. The Parthenon is a temple built for the goddess Athena. An acropolis is the main part of a city-state, often on the top of a hill.
At the top of the structure you have the Athens. The Athens are the citizens who have strong say and passion for the government. After that, you have the metics. The metics are not citizens, but are people who have come to the city-state to settle down. Next, you have the freedmen. The freedmen are men that were once slaves, but are now free. Finally, you have the slaves. These were usually men from war that had no say in government.
Zeus
Zeus was one of the most important gods in Ancient Greece. Zeus was the god and father of all gods. He was also the god of lightning and thunder.
Jupiter
Jupiter was also another important Greek god in the Ancient Greece time. He is the god of light and the sky.
