ANCIENT ASTRONOMY

  • Greek word meaning star
  • Greeks were pioneers in the astronomy field
  • They observed sun, moon and stars
  • Aristarchus was the first to suggest that earth revolved around the sun
  • Hipparchus- studied more then 850 stars, figured out how to estimate distances from the earth to the sun.

  • Greek word meaning writing about earth
  • Map makers located places on earth relative to the stars
  • They developed latitude and longitude
  • Ptolemy- wrote "Geography"
  • Geography listed over 8,000 places and his book had maps that shlwed the curved earth on a flat surface
