GREEK GODS AND GODDESSES

  • Zues is the king of the gods.He could control the weather. The ancient greek poet hesiod called him the cloud-gatherer and the thunderer. His most powerful weapon was the thunder bolt. The ancient greek believed when lighting struck it was zues being present.

ANCIENT OLYMPIC EVENTS

  • There olympic events was The pentathlon (consisting of five events: a foot race, a long jump, discus and javelin throws and a wrestling match) was introduced in 708 B.C., boxing in 688 B.C. and chariot racing in 680 B.C. In 648 B.C., pankration, a combination of boxing and wrestling with virtually no rules, debuted as an Olympic event.

  • The Parthenon is a former temple on the Athenian Acropolis, Greece, dedicated to the goddess Athena, whom the people of Athens considered their patron. Construction began in 447 BC when the Athenian Empire was at the peak of its power. FAMOUS GREEKS

  • Greek Philosophers Socrates - First of the great Greek Philosophers. He is considered by many to be the founder of Western philosophy. Plato - Student of Socrates. He wrote many dialogues using Socrates as a major character. He also founded the Academy in Athens. Aristotle - Student of Plato. Aristotle was a philosopher and scientist. He was interested in the physical world. He was also teacher to Alexander the Great.

GEOGRAPHY

  • Mainland Greece is a mountainous land almost completely surrounded by the Mediterranean Sea. Greece has more than 1400 islands. The country has mild winters and long, hot and dry summers. The ancient Greeks were a seafaring people.

  • For the Greeks (or more particularly the Athenians) any system which excluded power from the whole citizen-body and was not a tyranny or monarchy was described as an oligarchy.
