ANCIENT GREECE

LOCATION

  • Greece is located at the southeast end of Europe
  • Its the southernmost coutry of the Balkan Peninsula

CITY-STATE

  • A city state is a political unit made up of a city and all the surrounding land
  • The 2 most powerful city-state were Athens and Sparta

GOLDEN AGE

  • A period marked by great achievments in Greek history
  • Pericles was one of the great rulers of Greece

ATHENS

  • Athens was well known for its many philosophers
  • Athens was one of the first places to have a democracy

ATHENIANS

  • The athenians had a great interest in the olyimpics
  • The olyimpics took place every four years
  • They also wrote plays and made art

SPARTA

  • Sparta was one of Athens' greatest rivals
  • They were well known for their military

SPARTANS

  • Spartans did not recieve much education unlike Athenians
  • Usually at age 7 boys were sent to train to be in the military

HELLENISTIC

  • During this period many wars were held
  • During the wars greek culture was wildly spread

DAILY GREEK LIFE

  • Men took a great part in the cities' government
  • Women often satyed home and did the house work
  • Children usually played games

GREEK GOVERNMENT

  • Greece's city-states had different governments
  • Athens had the first democracy
  • Democracy quickly spread throughout all of greece

ALEXANDER THE GREAT

  • He was one of the greates generals in hostory
  • He conquered half of Europe but had to return because his troops were tired
  • He died around age 30

PARTHENON

  • The parthenon was a temple built to the goddess Athena
  • Many people gathered there during important occasions
  • Was built during the golden age

SOCIAL STUCTURE

  • At the top wer Gods
  • The council
  • The assembly
  • The jury
  • Men and children
  • Slaves and immigrants

3 MAJOR GODS : HADES

  • Hades was the lord of the underworld
  • Not considered death itself because that was a different god Thanatos

3 GODS POSEIDON

  • Poseidon was the lord of the seas
  • Anything in the sea was at his command

3 MAJOR GODS : ZEUS

  • Zeus was the lord of the skies
  • He is like the ruler of all the other olyipian gods and goddesses
