WHAT ARE THE ANCIENT GREEK OLYMPICS?

The ancient greek Olympics was a sporting event that was created in 776 B.C and played in Olympia and happend once every four years. It was played once every four years at the sanctuary of Zeus.

WHAT WAS THE PURPOSE FOR THE OLYMPICS?

The Olympics were to Honour the gods and to showcase the mortals athletic abilities. It was also a way for all the grecians to get together.

Fun fact! Did you know the only way to win a boxing match in the Olympics was if your opponent admit he lost , you knock him out or beat him to death.

Who played in the Olympics and what did they play?

Only young free men could participate in the olympics and only men could watch. The sports they played were boxing , riding , chariot racing , pankration , pentathlon , discus , javelin , jump , running and wrestling.

WHAT DID THE WINNER OF THE OLYMPICS GET?

The victor receives a crown made of olive leaves and a statue of them selves in Olympia. Although the victor does not receive any money he gets treated like a modern day sports celebrity by his city-state.

Another fun fact. Most Olympic athletes trained to the sound of flutes.
