PRESENTATION OUTLINE

The Roman Empire was successful due to their army because they won many battles, conquered much land, and protected the land they already had.

STANDARDS TO JOIN MILITARY

  • Be a member of the fifth census class or higher
  • Had to own property worth 3,500 sesterces in value
  • Supply your own armaments

TACTICS

  • The totoise- created a shell like armor
  • Wedge- triangle form making it easier form them to thrust enemy
  • Skirmishing- widely spaced line up of troops

EQUIPMENT

  • Gladius- sword
  • Pilum- heavy javelin
  • Hasta- about 6.5 ft long with an iron head and shaft

Gaius Marius reformed the roman legions for the better. He helped from and larger stronger military. He also gave the soldiers better retirement benefits and reduced rebellion against the Roman Empire.

First Punic war:
Was against Carthage which was the wealthiest and most advanced city in the region. Rome had no experience in oversea province but Carthage had a great deal of experience on the seas. Rome won and realized the importance of Mediterranean control.
