How the ancient Romans viewed death

  • they believed in immortality of the soul and that when you died you were taken to river styx. the soul then paid the ferry man to cross the river of styx.

How the Ancient Romans viewed death

  • After the soul crossed the river, they were judged to be a hero, a good citizen or a person who committed a crime.

how the ancient Romans viewed death

  • Once you were judged, you were either sent to the realm of the heroes, the realm of good citizens, or you were sent to the realm of suffering where you would be tortured by Tartarus until he believed you have served a proper sentence for your crime.

the romans had 5 steps in the funeral process.

Roman ceremonial rituals

  • Procession, the people would make loud noises while moving the dead body.
  • Cremation, they would take the body to the city of the dead and put it on a funeral pyre to be cremated. it would then be placed in a funerary earn.

  • 3, Eulogy, if the deceased person was an important person, then the family would offer a brief eulogy.
  • 4, feast, it is the final marker in the funeral and it told the spirit that it could continue its journey to the other realm.

  • 5, Commemoration, once the funeral was finished the person had to be remembered. The roman state gave a set 8 days each year to remember your ancestors and loved ones who had died

  • To show respect to a deceased family member the romans took at least 8 days out of each year to remember, pray for, and visit the graves of their family and ancestors.
