EARLY LIFE

  • Jackson was a self-made man
  • He was born in 1767 on the South Carolina frontier
  • He grew up in poverty but he loved sports
  • He had a hot temper
  • The Revolutionary War ended his childhood

PERSONAL LIFE

  • When he was captured by the British, his head and hand were sliced
  • After the war, he became a lawyer in North Carolina
  • He moved to Tennessee and earned enough money to buy land and slaves
  • His hot temper challenged Charles Dickinson to a duel with pistols
  • Dickinson missed Jackson's heart by an inch and Jackson killed him with one shot

PRESIDENCY

  • Jackson entered politics in Tennessee
  • He served both the House and the Senate
  • He ran for president against Clay, Crawford, and Adams in 1824
  • In 1828, he was elected President of the United States
  • The idea was known as Jacksonian Democracy
