Jackson was a self-made man
He was born in 1767 on the South Carolina frontier
He grew up in poverty but he loved sports
He had a hot temper
The Revolutionary War ended his childhood

When he was captured by the British, his head and hand were sliced
After the war, he became a lawyer in North Carolina
He moved to Tennessee and earned enough money to buy land and slaves
His hot temper challenged Charles Dickinson to a duel with pistols
Dickinson missed Jackson's heart by an inch and Jackson killed him with one shot

PRESIDENCY
Jackson entered politics in Tennessee
He served both the House and the Senate
He ran for president against Clay, Crawford, and Adams in 1824
In 1828, he was elected President of the United States
The idea was known as Jacksonian Democracy
