Past

• Grew up in suburb of Santa Rosa, CA
• Wanted to be a teacher since Sophomore year in High School
• Earned a BA in History at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo
• Moved to Detroit, MI in July 2013 to begin work as Teach for America Corps Member
• First year of Teaching: 6th-8th Grade Social Studies, Detroit Community Schools
• Second Year of Teaching: 5th/6th Writing, Science, and Social Studies, Lighthouse Academy in Southwest Detroit

Future: Doesn't want to leave Detroit or the classroom anytime soon, but the future is unpredictable. Maybe Graduate School someday, but never (again) at the same time as full time Middle School Teaching.

Purpose: I teach because I believe our children are the superheroes who will solve the world's biggest problems. Too often, our education system has functioned to maintain the status quo, and ignored the lived realities of urban youth. Our schools should go above beyond the transmission of academic content to create communities of hope, healing, and social change.
