Anemia

Anemia is a condition where your body doesn't have enough healthy red blood cells or hemoglobin as it should. (Red blood cells provide oxygen to body tissues), (Hemoglobin is the main part of the cell that binds oxygen).

CONTRIBUTING FACTORS OF ANEMIA

  • Heredity (mother to baby)
  • Pregnancy (loss of blood and demand of blood)
  • Older people (poor diet and medical conditions)
  • Menstruation (loss of blood)
  • BEING A WOMAN

Causes of anemia

  • Blood loss
  • Decreased or faulty red blood cell production
  • Destruction of red blood cells

Symptoms of anemia

  • Fatigue and shortness of breath
  • Unusually rapid heart rate and chest pain
  • Pale skin
  • Dizziness or Headaches
  • Coldness in the hands or feet

TREATMENT OF ANEMIA

  • Oxygen, fluids, fresh frozen plasma
  • Vasopressors (medication to elevate blood pressure)
  • Platelet replacement

PREVENTION OF ANEMIA

  • Dietary changes
  • Supplements
  • Tell your doctor about all of your signs and symptoms
  • If it's caused by medication, switch medications
  • Some types, like sickle cell anemia, cannot be prevented
