PRESENTATION OUTLINE
The Anglo-Saxons loved eating and drinking and often had feasts in their main hall. The food was cooked over a fire and was usually served with bread.
They drank ale and mead (beer made with sweet honey)from large goblets and drinking horns.
After each feast the minstrel would play a harp and sing songs of great battles and brave heroes.
THE ANGLO-SAXONS ATE WHAT THEY GREW
- Cereals (rice, barley, wheat)
- Vegetables (carrots, cabbage, peas)
- Fruit (apples, cherries, plums)
Due to their rivers being polluted, the Anglo-Saxons mostly drank a weak beer made of barley.
MOST OF THE ANGLO-SAXONS WERE VEGETARIANS
- Meat was not an easy food to obtain.
- In order to get meat, you needed to pay the owner of the land who has the animal to slaughter the animal and also pay him for the meat itself as well.
- Pigs were the only animal raised and killed just for its meat.
- They also ate fish which they caught in the river and the sea.
THE ANGLO-SAXONS HAD MANY COMPLEX DISHES
- One dish that they Anglo-Saxons might have eaten at the time would be quail and bacon stew with walnuts.
- This dish alone represents their intelligence and knowledge of the land.
