PRESENTATION OUTLINE
THE ANGLO-SCOTTISH BORDER
BY SARA EVELYN AND ASHLEY
ANALYSIS
- On both the graphs Christianity is the main religion, but according to news sources many people of the UK don't associate themselves with any religion. I think this is because many people do not fully agree with a religion and some choose not to because of personal reasons.
- However, many people have a religion, making up the rest of the pie charts.
MEDIAN AGE IN SCOTLAND AND ENGLAND
ETHNIC GROUPS IN SCOTLAND
Population: 5,000,000
ANALYSIS
- Firstly, the Ethnic groups are almost entirely white. I think it is like this because of Irish immigration into mainly Scotland, but also England. Many people immigrated to escape the great famine. Many polish also came into Scotland to work in key industries and to train for WWII.
- However many other ethnic groups came to Scotland to escape their country's hardships, creating the 4% of all minority ethnic groups.
ETHNICITY GROUPS IN ENGLAND
ANALYSIS
- I think England is more diverse than Scotland, because England is more well known. It has more employment opportunities and business start ups. London is also a much bigger city than any city in Scotland. This is why I think more different ethnicities immigrated to England than Scotland.
- Therefore, this is why there is a bigger Asian population in England than Scotland. That is also why there is a bigger percentage of other ethnicities too.
GDP OF ENGLAND AND SCOTLAND IN US DOLLARS
ANALYSIS
- I believe the GDP graph show a major difference in the economy of Scotland versus England. Firstly England's GDP is much bigger, because England has bigger cities, more businesses, and more people. Scotland's GDP is lower, because of smaller cities, less people and less technological startups. This would make a major difference of England and Scotland, this could've caused many issues in the past. However, I do not think this is the reason Scotland wants to leave the UK.
ANALYSIS
- I think the main language is English, because the majority of the population isn't immigrants and learned the original language of England. Also, a lot of businessmen in England and Scotland speak mainly in English making the language an important skill to have.
- Also, there are immigrants that do not speak English, making translation hard and making other languages more common.
SCOTLAND'S MAJOR EXPORTS
- Food and Beverages
- Business services
- Oil, gas and fuel equipment
- Renewable energy equipment and technology
- Chemicals
- Textiles
- Mechanical Engineering
ENGLAND'S MAJOR EXPORTS
- Chemicals
- Textiles
- Food (processed)
- Mechanical Engineering
- Technology
- Ships/aircrafts
- Petroleum and coal
- Paper/paper products
- Railroad equipment
- Metals
ANALYSIS
- Along with GDP exports also are different for England and Scotland. Scotland produces the same amount as England but of different things. England seems to create things more to do with technology which may be why their GDP is so much higher. Scotland's exports are mostly food, drinks and chemicals which the world doesn't seem to be paying as much for. These exports seem to set England apart from Scotland financially, though a lot of things are the same about
SUMMARY OF THE MAPS
- Over the course of time, there are few changes in the border between England and Scotland. In 1237 the Treaty of York officially defined the border between the two countries. The border created back then is the border that still stands today. But there is a difference where from where Berwick used to be versus now. In 1482 it was taken by England and now Berwick is Berwick upon River Tweed. The England Scotland border, also knows as the Anglo-Scottish border, is still one of the oldest political borders in the world.
Timeline of the Anglo-Scottish Border
SUMMARY OF OUR ESSAY
- The English-Scottish border was officially established in 1237 when the Treaty of York was signed. It is one of the oldest political borders that still exists today. Hadrian's wall was built in 122 AD near where the current border is today. In 1513 was the Battle of Flodden Field, which was a devastating loss for Scotland. In 1707, the Treaty of Union was signed. The treaty brought together England and Scotland's parliaments. The English-Scottish Border has been the subject of controversy for many years now.
EXPECTED OUTCOME
- The English-Scottish border has not changed for many centuries. I doubt that the current controversy will result in any change of the border. The controversy could change is the political relationship between the two countries. It could also change relationships between friends and families who have different opinions on if Scotland should have left the United Kingdom. I think that because of the outcome of the recent general elections, the Scottish National Party winning all but three seats, it is very likely that Scotland could separate from the United Kingdom.
SOLUTIONS
- One is to give even seats to all of the UK
- Another is to let Scotland be in charge of their own government and rules
