  • He was a mouse
  • His girlfriend was a mouse
  • He was made by Walt Disney
  • A simple oval for his eyes in the 1920's

POPEYE THE SAILOR

  • 1919
  • Voiced by a total of 11 people
  • Said to have been based off of Frank "Rocky" Fiegel
  • Created by Elzie Crisler Segar
  • Formally appeared in 1929 in Thimble Theatre
  • Most popular in the 1930's
  • Max Fleischer adapted the Thimble Theatre characters into a series of Popeye the Sailor (1933)

BETTY BOOP (1930)

  • Jazz age flapper
  • Voiced by a total of 11 people
  • Created by Max Fleischer
  • Originally a French poodle with human characteristics
  • Her floppy poodle ears became hoop earrings, and her black poodle nose became a button- like nose
  • Supporting character in 10 cartoon as a flapper girl

HELEN KANE LAWSUIT

  • Helen Kane filed a lawsuit against Max Fleischer and Paramount Publix for deliberate caricature (intentional imitation)
  • New York Supreme Court Justice Edward J McGoldrick ruled "The plaintiff has failed to sustain either cause of action by proof of sufficient probation force".
  • Helen was also a imitation of someone else, which didn't help her case.

  • He was a dog
  • Betty Boop was originally his girlfriend
  • Betty Boop and Bimbo broke up due to the Production Code of Cencership
  • Bimbo having a human girlfriend gave the impression of bestiality

POOCH THE PUP

  • This is what he looked like after he was redesigned
  • Created by Walter Lanz
  • Would say "heh!" In a squeaky voice when surprised
  • He pounds his chest and makes sounds like Tarzan before he saves his girlfriend
  • He looked like bimbo after he was redesigned

SIMILARITIES

  • In the 1930's there were triangles cut out of the eyes
  • They were all in black and white
  • The males were often made to be heroes
  • Their images were mostly based off of someone else's
  • They were often voiced by a lot of people because of deaths
