ANISOCORIA AND HORNER'S SYNDROME

WHAT IS ANISOCORIA?

  • A disorder in which the pupils are a different size at the same time
  • Nearly 20% of the population has anisocoria

WHAT IS HORNER'S SYNDROME?

  • Different sized pupils
  • Droopiness of upper eyelid
  • Raised lower eyelid
  • Caused by underlying symptoms

SIGNS AND SYMPTOMS

  • Different sized pupils (Anisocoria)
  • Droopiness off upper eyelid of affected eye
  • Raised lower eyelid of affected eye
  • One pupil does not dialate as well as the other

CAUSES OF ANISOCORIA

  • Inflammation of the eye
  • Horner's syndrome
  • Unknown causes

CAUSES OF HORNER'S SYNDROME

  • Tumor in the top of the lung
  • Injury to carotid artery
  • Injury to brachial plexus
  • Migraine or cluster headaches
  • A stroke ormother damage to the brainstem

TESTS

  • Different eyedrops for anisocoria
  • MRIs for Horner's syndrome
  • CT scans

TREATMENT

  • The treatment lies at the underlying cause

PREVENTION

  • Horner's syndrome cannot be prevented

RISK FACTORS

  • About 20% of the population has anisocoria
  • There is not a racial, age, or gender prediction
