My name is Annie Bidwell. I taught sewing to local Indian women, and helped their children read and write English.

Of course, before I could do any of that, I had to travel 2,000 miles as I moved to the west and found my husband.

I was a single woman when I traveled out west in covered wagons. Most women like myself move to the west seeking homesteads, husbands, or other opportunities.

The journey took about 4-6 months. We had to leave most of our treasures behind.

The women had to cook, wash clothes, and take care of the children. Disease also killed many people, and some drowned while crossing rivers.

Once I made it off the trail, I married John Bidwell, and moved to his ranch in what it now Chico California.
