  • Eating disorder that makes people lose more weight than is considered healthy.
  • Most common eating disorder.
  • Intense fear of gaining weight.
  • Distorted body image.

EXTREME DIETING

  • Starts as dieting but gets out of control.
  • Usually starts in the teen years.
  • More common in females than males.

DISTORTED BODY IMAGE

  • When looking in the mirror they see a fat person.
  • Weigh themselves over and over on a daily basis.

LONGTERM EFFECTS

  • Anorexia nervosa takes an enormous toll on the body.
  • The first victim of anorexia is often the bones.
  • Osteoporosis

DAMAGES THE HEART

  • As the body loses muscle mass,it loses heart muscle also.
  • Heart gets smaller and weaker
  • Most common reason for hospitalization in most people with anorexia.

TREATMENT

  • Individual therapy
  • Family- based therapy
  • Group therapy

MEDICATIONS

  • There are no medications specifically designed to treat anorexia.
  • Antidepressants can help treat depression or anxiety.

RECOVERY

  • Approximately 50 percent fully recover.
  • The other 50 percent have recurring relapses.
