CAUSES

  • Microtia and Anotia occur when the tissues that form the auricle fail to develop during the first few weeks of pregnancy
  • Microtia consists of malformation or hypoplasia of the auricle.
  • Anotia occurs when there is a complete absence of the auricle and auditory canal.
  • The external auditory canal may also be narrow or absent

TREATMENT

  • Reconstructive surgery to restore a missing or significantly deformed body part
  • Prosthetic ears, attached to the patient’s head by either glue or titanium pins
  • Removing cartilage from the patient’s rib to construct an ear that is covered by the patient’s skin tissue

PREVENTION

  • Women who use drugs have an increased risk of having a child with absent ears
  • In most cases, it is not possible to prevent the disorder due to its unknown etiolog
  • It can be hereditary, so you can't prevent that
