ANTARCTICA

BY MARGHERITA

5 FACTS ABOUT ANTARCTICA

  • The name "Antarctica" means the opposite to Arctic.
  • When the new ice falls on the old ice it creates a substance called firn, then ice.
  • Nobody went to Antarctica before the 1920's.
  • Antarctica contains 90 percent of the world's ice and 70 percent of the world's fresh water.
  • Antarctica has a record of the lowest temperature that reached 128,6.F .

ANIMALS

THAT LIVE IN ANTARCTICA

EMPEROR PENGUINS

  • They are the largest of all penguins
  • They weight about 30kg and height approximately 1.15m
  • They have an upright and regal position which suggests their name

ADELIE PENGUINS

  • They have an average weight of 5kg
  • They have an average height of 70cm
  • Their colonies are very loud

SOUHERN ELEPHANT SEAL

  • It is also called 'Mirounga Leonina'
  • It is the largest Antarctic Seal
  • It gets its name from its size and its large proboscis

WEDDELL SEALS

  • They are also called Leptonichotes Weddelli
  • They belong to a group of seals called Phocidea or true seals
  • They live further South than any other animal

KILLER WHALE

  • The killer whale is also called 'Orca'
  • It's the world's biggest dolphin
  • It can live an average of 50 to 80 years
  • They grouw to be about 8-10 meters long, weighting more than 3.600-5.400 kg

FOOD CHAIN

This image shows a very common and simple food chain that occurs in Antarctica. Every single spices is very important for the food chain. It starts by phytoplankton, an then goes on to krill that gets eaten by squid or cod that then get eaten by penguins or crabeater seals that then get eaten by the killer whale.

KRILL DISAPPEARING

Krill is a very important part of the food chain. Lots of animals feed on it. There would be many consequences if it disappeared because animals wouldn't know what to eat, so they'd die.

CLIMATE CHANGE

Untitled Slide

  • There are strong winds called katabatics
  • Most of Antarctica is a high and flat plateau of ice
  • Diring winters the temperature on the coast is usually around -30 degrees
  • In more elevated parts during the winter it's around -60 degrees
  • During the summer its around -20 to -5 degrees

ICE CORES

Ice cores are cylinders of ice drilled out of an ice sheet or glacier. The oldest continuous ice core record in Antarctica is from 800.000 years ago.

WHY ARE ICE CORES USEFUL?

Ice cores are used by scientists, they retrieve them to look for records of climate change, from past years.

HOW CLIMATE CHANGE

IS AFFECTING THE ICE AND WILDLIFE

Changes of temperature, would effect the ocean's capacity, the ice would melt. Antarctica has an important ecosystem adapted to live on ice. If the ice would melt animals would die as they would not know where to live.

WHAT WOULD HAPPEN IF

ANTARCTICA DISSAPEARED

If Antarctica disappeared, the ice would rise by 61 meters. Many cities including Monaco would flood due to the ice melting making sea levels rise and the planet would get hotter due to Global Warming.

HELP SAVE ANTARCTICA

  • Reduce fossil fuels
  • Save electricity whenever you can
  • Recycle
  • Don't pollute the sea
