SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON

SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON

  • Sir Henry Ernest Shackleton was born in Ireland, but grew up in Britain, which set him up to lead three British expeditions.
  • He was born on Feb 15 1874, and he died on Jan 5 1922.
  • He joined his first expedition in 1901 but got sent home early due to bad health.

SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON

  • He first led the Trans-Antarctic Expediton. Disaster came when his ship, the Endurance, was crushed by ice.
  • His men used three boats and went through dangerous conditions to get to Elephant Island.
  • But Elephant Island is more than 800 miles from the nearest inhabited land with people who could help them.
  • He left his crew behind and travelled to South Georgia where he would find help.

SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON

  • He died of a heart attack on the 5 Jan 1922. He was going to the Antarctic again on a boat called the Quest. He died at Grytviken which is near South Georgia, where he is buried.

SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON

  • The members left at Elephant Island stayed there until Shackleton came back. Many believed that their survival was due to Shackletons great leadership. Many said "If it wasn't for Shackleton, many of us wouldn't of survived the trip".

SIR ERNEST SHACKLETON

  • When he was young he was a romantic adventurer who then became interested in exploring, and then joined the Royal Geographical Society while still at sea. He earned himself a place in Captain Scott's Expedition in 1901.
  • And that was also his first expedition.
