THE CLOCKWORK ORANGE

  • A dystopian novel that highlights extreme youth violence in English society
  • Is mostly written in a type of Russian slang Burgess calls Nadsat
  • The main character Alex can be seen as a sociopath, but is also quite intelligent, siting his love of Beethoven despite his violent nature.

STYLE

  • Burgess' use of Nadsat is an example of onomatopoeia, you can tell what the word means by its context and sound
  • The novel is like Frank Herbert's Dune. It uses made up words to describe futuristic objects.

ANALYSIS

  • The title "A Clockwork Orange" refers to the english government trying to impose mechanical, communist idea on natural human beings.
  • Burgess uses the totalitarian ideas seen in Soviet Russia at the time to show how with technology, the rulers of communist societies could control its citizens
