He studied science and was a chemist and biologist. He studied combustion. In 1776 he burned mercury in an enclosed vase. He concluded that air is a combination of oxygen and it is not a chemical element. He explained combustion by oxidation.

He discovered the law of conservation of mass, nothing is lost, nothing is created in a chemical reaction.

In 1789 he proposed that quartz is likely to be the oxide of an element which is very common but not yet identified. This is silicone.
