- Mothers family were brewers
- Educated in the town of Warmond
- 1648: apprenticed to a fabric merchant

- 1654: self employed as a draper
- Also worked as a wine assayer, surveyor, city official
- 1668: learned how to grind lenses/ use magnification
- Inspired by Robert Hooke's Micrographia
- 1671: made simple microscopes

- 3-4 inches long
- Powerful magnifying lenses (not compound)
- Uses one lens mounted between two brass plates
- Specimen was mounted on the tip of a screw
- Held up to the eye and adjusts using two screws
