What is Anxiety?
Anxiety is a feeling of worry, nervousness, or unease, typically about an imminent event or something with an uncertain outcome.

ANXIETY SYMPTOMS

  • Feelings of panic, fear, and uneasiness
  • Problems sleeping.
  • Cold or sweaty hands and/or feet.
  • Shortness of breath.
  • Heart palpitations.
  • An inability to be still and calm.
  • Dry mouth.
  • Numbness or tingling in the hands or feet.
  • Nausea
  • Muscle tension
  • Dizziness
  • Hyperventilating

AREAS OF THE BRAIN THAT ARE AFFECTED BY ANXIETY

  • Amygdala
  • Hippocampus
  • Hypothalamus
  • Prefrontal cortex
  • Thalamus
  • Brain stem

NEUROTRANSMITTERS THAT ARE INVOLED

  • GABA- principal role in reducing neuronal excitability throughout the nervous system.
  • Serotonin- relays signals between nerve cells, regulating their intensity.
  • Norepinephrine- "fight or flight"

Complications Of Anxiety

  • Depression
  • Substance abuse
  • Trouble sleeping
  • Digestive or bowel problems
  • Headaches
  • Suicide
  • Poor quality of life

PREVENTION FOR ANXIETY

  • Avoid caffeine
  • Do not smoke or use smokeless tobacco products
  • Exercise daily
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy
